Shawano Dems Newsletter for Oct., Nov. and Dec., 2017

CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR

The race for governor is becoming more competitive.  Thus far seven candidates have announced their bid with the possibility of others joining them.  Democratic candidates making appearances thus far in Shawano County include Mike McCabe, Andy Gronik and Kathleen Vinehout.

Candidate Bob Harlow will be at the October 18th Shawano Dems’ meeting.  His professional work has used his knowledge of physics to write computer software.  If elected governor, he says he would bring innovation to the governor’s office.  He has an 8 point plan for Wisconsin.  Some of it involves attracting better paying jobs, improving internet accessibility and building roadways to last.  Harlow will be speaking at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center.

More candidates will be invited to future meetings.

EXPLORING NOW BOOK CLUB

In an effort to understand what is going on in our political system, the Exploring Now Book Club has been formed.  Their next meeting is Friday, October 13th at the Shawano City-County Library.  If you have read a book which “explores” what is happening “now”, join in the discussion from 11:00-12:30.  If you want to be a part of future meetings, contact Jan Koch at 715-526-2955.

OCTOBER FILM SHOWING

With the recent shooting spree in Las Vegas there is a renewed interest for our country to do something about gun accessibility.  The film “Gunned Down:  The Power of the NRA” is a PBS Frontline film which traces the history of the National Rifle Association and how it became so powerful.  It will be shown to the public on Monday, October 23rd at 7:00 pm at the Shawano Civic Center.

KNOCK DOORS FOR TAMMY

The 2018 fall election will be held on November 6th.  Tammy Baldwin will be up for re-election as a US Senator from Wisconsin.  The weekend of November 4th marks one year out from that election.  A canvass of the City of Shawano will take place at that time.  Voters will be given information about Tammy as canvassers  attempt to initiate conversations by asking them questions about the issues which are on the their minds.  Volunteers are needed both to knock on doors and to drive canvassers around town.  Please contact Jan Koch if you can help.

Chair’s Comments

I wish to thank all those who attended our successful Fall Fundraising Dinner on Oct. 7th and those who gave donations.  If you didn’t have chance to make a monetary donation, you can still help us to meet our goal.  Make  checks to the Shawano Democratic Party and send them to Bob Koch at W4769 Birchwood Drive, Shawano, WI 54166.

There is still time to let me know if you are interested in being a poll worker in the 2018-2019 elections.  You do not have to live in the municipality in which you work.  You will receive some monetary compensation but you may have to undergo some training.

As noted above, this is the last newsletter of 2017.  The next newsletter will be sent out in January, 2018.  Thank you for allowing us to update you on what is happening with the Shawano Dems.  Enjoy the upcoming holidays and feel free to contact any of us with your questions and concerns.
