We are honored to have the President of the College of Menominee Nation as our speaker at our next meeting on September 18th. Dr. Paul Trebian will be speaking about what is going on at the college and his goals. The meeting begins 7:00 pm at the Shawano Civic Center. The business meeting will follow.
BONDUEL FOUNDER’S DAY
On September 21st the Shawano Dems will have a booth at Founder’s Day in Bonduel. We will have a Presidential straw poll, pass out information on topics that are important to Democrats and sell nonpartisan signs. Both signs educate the public about important issues that are of concern in our elections. The “This Time Wisconsin Deserves Fair Maps” sign directs voters to the website www.FairmapsWI.org. The sign “Big Money Out of Politics” refers them to www.UnitedtoAmend.org.
HELPING OUT SAM 25
One of the goals we have every year is for the Shawano Dems to demonstrate Democratic values through public service. This year we are helping SAM 25 with their capital campaign by manning the stand at Charlie’s Red Barn on September 27th. The Shawano Area Women’s Network (SAWN) will also be helping. During the day workers will rotate in 2-3 hour shifts. If you can help out, please contact Jan Koch at 715-296-6726.
FALL FUNDRAISING DINNER
This year’s dinner will be held on October 5th at the Shawano Lake Golf Course. The event begins at 4:30 pm with an open bar. A dinner of prime rib and honey glazed ham will be served at 5:30 pm. Speakers include Amanda Stuck, Candidate for the 8th Congressional District and Allie Tempus, a Shawano native who is now the Associate Editor for The Progressive Magazine. “Grey donkey” donations for the raffle baskets are appreciated. If you have gently used items you would like to donate, please let us know.
CLIMATE CHANGE OP-ED
The recent devastating hurricane shows what can happen because of climate change, September’s topic. There is evidence, facts, and science that tell us the global warming is real. Profound changes to transportation, housing, energy, agriculture, forestry and more are a part the “Green New Deal” legislation. Governor Evers is moving Wisconsin forward by committing the state to use 100 percent carbon neutral energy by 2050.

Chair’s Comments
Thanks to all who helped with our Shawano County Fair booth. It was great to have numerous volunteers to talk with those stopping by. Congratulations to Pat Brunker who won the handmade train. Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden were the top straw poll winners.
Thanks to the Wescott United to Amend group the town will be having a referendum in the April, 2020 election to get money out of politics . Thus far over 150 municipalities in Wisconsin and 20 states have approved resolutions calling for a constitutional amendment which would reverse the Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision. The amendment would limit the amount of money that could be spent by corporations, unions and PACs on our elections. There are handouts and signs for those who would like to encourage residents to vote “yes” on this referendum. If you live in the Town of Wescott, please let us know that you would like to help spread the word to your neighbors and friends.
