Newsletter for July 2019

JULY 17TH MEETING

Speaking at the next meeting is Muffy Culhane from SAM 25.  She will be discussing their new facility and future fundraising events.  The Shawano Dems are thankful for the efforts of this wonderful organization which helps those who are temporarily homeless. We plan to help however we can.  The meeting will be held on July 17th at the Shawano Civic Center at 7:00 pm.

THE NEED FOR FAIR MAPS

After the U.S. Census is taken in 2020, states are required to redraw their voting districts with the new census data.  In 2011 when the districts were redrawn, Republicans had control of the legislature and the governorship.  They drew unfair state assembly, state senate and congressional district maps. Democratic voters were packed into a few districts and the rest were spread out thinly over remaining districts.  This tactic guaranteed Republican voters would always make up the majority in future elections.

The Fair Maps Project is working toward a nonpartisan redistricting process in which election maps are drawn by a state agency which is nonpartisan.  You can get a Fair Maps sign by coming to one of our events.  We will have a booth at ShawanoFest on Sat., July 13th in downtown Shawano.  The cost of a sign is a $5.00 donation.
Fair maps will also be the July topic.  We will be having an op-ed in the Shawano Leader and will talk about it on the Breakfast Club.

JULY 25TH PICNIC

Our picnic will be held at Kuckuck Park from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, July 25th.  We will be having hamburgers and brats.  Those attending are asked to bring a salad or dessert dish to share.

We have invited Jill Karofsky, candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Senator Dave Hansen to attend.  Jill will be on the ballot in the February primary election.  Dave has been working in the senate on fair map legislation.  We will also be having a silent auction.  Please bring any items you would like to donate.

VOLUNTEER TO BE A POLL WORKER

Every two years it is the responsibility of the Democratic and Republican chairpersons to nominate voters as poll workers.  The names the municipal clerks receive from each party must be considered as poll workers when the township and village boards and city councils vote on the list.  Poll workers do get compensated but must go through a training process.  If you would like to be a poll worker, please let Jan Koch know your intentions.  You can call her or email her at shawanodems2@gmail.com.

Chair’s Comments

It is important we are visible in the county.  We were in the Bonduel parade on July 4th, the Gresham parade on July 6th and we will be at the Pulaski Polka Fest parade on July 21st.

We are in need of more volunteers to step forward and help out a few hours at some of our events.

ShawanoFest is on July 13th, the Shawano County Fair lasts from Aug. 28 through Sept. 2 and Bonduel Founder’s Day is on Sept. 21st.  At each of these events we will be selling the Fair Maps signs, educating voters with brochures and copies of our op-eds and passing out voter registration information.  Please let us know that you can help in these efforts.
