NEWSLETTER FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2019

McCARTHY IN THE COURTHOUSE
Joseph McCarthy may have been a lawyer in Shawano but should his picture still hang in the 2nd Circuit Courtroom in the Shawano County Court House?
McCarthy became a Republican Senator during the 1950’s.  During the McCarthy era hundreds of Americans were accused of being communists or communist sympathizers.  Under his leadership the U.S. Congress conducted aggressive investigations and hearings which led to accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence.
Steve Menard, a lawyer in Shawano, will be the speaker at the January 16th meeting.  He feels that McCarthy’s picture should be preserved with the Shawano County Historical Society as a part of Shawano’s history.  The meeting will be held at the Shawano Civic Center (225 S. Main St.) at 7:00 pm.

NEUBAUER FOR WI SUPREME COURT
Judge Lisa Neubauer has accepted an invitation to attend our February 20th meeting.   Since launching her campaign to become a Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice she has traveled all over the state, hearing voter’s thoughts, ideas and rallying support for a fair, impartial and independent Supreme Court.  During the last ten years she has been an appellate court judge and has been the chief judge of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals since 2015.  She collected over 8,000 signatures (four times the required amount) to officially qualify to be on the April ballot.

BREAKFAST CLUB TOPICS
The Shawano Democrats are on the WTCH Breakfast Club on the 2nd Thursday of every month from 8:00-9:00 am.  During 2019 they will be focusing on of a different topic each month from the Democratic perspective.  The topic for January will be immigration.  Tune into 960 am.
Democrats want to work toward a comprehensive immigration reform that concentrates on improving border security at the ports of entry.  Their plan targets enforcement so we are targeting criminals—not families.  They want to keep families together and strengthen our economy.  They are committed to preserve President Obama’s successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program which gives temporary status that allows DREAMers to study, work, pay taxes and contribute to the communities they grew up in.  Democrats want to treat all people who come to the United States with dignity and respect.

Chair’s Comments
We knew when we met Mandela Barnes, Sarah Godlewski and Josh Kaul at events in Shawano last year that they had the ideas and enthusiasm that would propel them into office.  Thanks to all the volunteers who knocked doors, made phone calls and talked with voters, we now have Democrats in charge of our state leadership.
Thank you to all who gave their time to help get voters to the polls.  We hope you will continue to be motivated to spread our message.

The Democratic Party of Shawano County has elected officers for the next two years.  Congratulations to Denise Riley who is now our 2nd Vice Chair.  The rest of the officers remain the same: Jan Koch, Chair; Dan Weidner, 1st Vice Chair; Jan Schreiber, Secretary; and Bob Koch, Treasurer.

Don’t hesitate to contact us with your ideas and concerns.  We welcome those who have ideas they would like to share on the Breakfast Club.
