In 2010 the United States Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision gave the nation’s ultra-wealthy a monopoly on political speech. Since that time big money has flowed into our elections. A Constitutional Amendment is necessary to overturn this ruling. There are proposals in the House of Representatives and the Wisconsin Legislature that need public support. Call your representatives and voice your opinion.
The House Judiciary has Resolution 48 which proposes an amendment to the Constitution of the US providing that the rights extended by the Constitution are the rights of natural persons only (not corporations). It has been introduced and referred to the subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice. Contact Representative Mike Gallagher (202-225-5665).
Two Wisconsin lawmakers, Rep. Lisa Subeck and Sen. Dave Hansen, have introduced resolutions that would create a statewide Citizens United referendum asking voters if they support putting limits on the corrupting influence big money has in political campaigns. Call Assemblyman GaryTauchen (715-758-6181) and ask him to cosponsor LRB-76 and Senator Robert Cowles (920-448-5092) and ask him to cosponsor LRB-1138. If these are not your representatives because of where you live, please look up your representitives and call.
